March is pretty sweet for two big reasons: it’s the start of spring and, every other year, it marks Month of Photography here in Denver. And while we do enjoy Colorado’s rather extreme spring weather, you can probably guess that we’re a little more excited about the latter.
As a photography company that places great emphasis on community involvement, the gang here at From the Hip Photo is pretty darned proud to have partnered with the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. It’s the only nonprofit in Denver, Colorado that is dedicated exclusively to photography in all its myriad, wondrous forms! They offer a plethora of workshops and portfolio reviews, offer equipment rentals to further one’s photography education, and curate some pretty spectacular exhibitions.
The Month of Photography was co-founded by Mark Sink, who is an advisor to the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. Being a biennial event (it happens every other year) you definitely don’t want to miss it! Throughout the month, the Colorado Photographic Arts Center holds a number of different collaborative events for you to attend all throughout the region. It’s a rare opportunity to witness the best in photography from the state and beyond and we can’t overstate how phenomenal it is to see so much outstanding art being showcased in such a short burst of time.
If you’re ever curious as to what kind of artwork is featured, check out the Month of Photography website, which provides examples from the last biennial’s offerings. There are also great images of this year’s programs if you want to pick a specific collection to see.
Lucky for you, you don’t have to look any further on the interwebs for the event calendar because we have a copy of it right here for you. As you can see, there’s an event nearly every day (and sometimes in multiple places simultaneously). There are SO many options. If you pick wisely you’ll even catch the From The Hip Photo team documenting some of the exhibition opening receptions and panel discussions!
If we’re being completely honest here, the Month of Photography goes through April and even dips its toes a little bit in May. No complaints from us about the elastic usage of “month,” though! We strongly suggest you check out some of these exhibitions as well as poke your head into the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. We pinky promise they will not disappoint!
