Rachel & Hunter | Romantic Rocky Mountain National Park Engagement

January 20, 2017 March 15, 2026 From the Hip Photo1 comment8619 views

Bet you didn’t expect this mid-November Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photo session to be bright, sunny, and just the perfect temperature for a flowing dress! Honestly, we didn’t either. But now that we are covered in a blanket of snow, we are very grateful. As were Rachel and Hunter, our adorable subjects who playfully posed for their sun-streaked engagement photos at Sprague Lake.

The warm fall weather allowed us to spend more time outdoors all over our beautiful state! One of our new favorite places is Sprague Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park. It makes for a truly romantic engagement photo location because it is overflowing with peaceful, blue lakes and lush, green trees! There is an easy, looped hike at Sprague Lake with some breathtaking views of the mountains. Rachel and Hunter are huge fans of exploring the outdoors so this was the perfect location for them!

To add to the beauty, Rachel looked divine in her Anthropologie dress! It had a perfectly floral fall vibe and we especially loved how the light bounced through the bottom of it. Photo tip! Always remember to pack a floral dress perfect for twirling when heading to the mountains.

Not sure what to wear for your upcoming engagement photo session? Don’t worry, we are here to help! Check out our What to Wear for Engagement Photos blog post or look through our Pinterest board for some inspiration.

Our favorite moment during this romantic Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photo session was happening upon some fishermen. With our fingers crossed for luck, we approached them with the request to incorporate them into our photos. To our delight, they were on board!

We were careful not to spook the fish as we hung out by the shoreline. And we were also mindful when timing our photos with the fisherman about to cast their lines. By taking care to frame Rachel and Hunter centrally, we took take advantage of the fishermen and the position of the setting sun. If you look carefully, you’ll notice that the sun’s reflection shimmers on the surface of the water directly behind the couple, giving the image a nice backlighting effect. Swoon!

This Rocky Mountain National Park engagement session also involved a little hiking! The one-mile loop turned out to be the perfect amount of walking to find a wide variety of backgrounds, without being overwhelming. Rachel and Hunter are adventurers and weren’t afraid to walk into the tall grass or sit on the damp ground. As photographers, we’re always thankful when our subjects don’t worry too much about getting a few leaves on their clothes. We promise the photos will always be worth it!

To top things off, we had the opportunity to spot a bunch of elk and deer as we left the park. Consequesnsly, we were reminded of how fortunate we are to be able to explore and photograph our magnificent state of Colorado.
