You just booked professional headshots in Denver — nice. Whether it’s for LinkedIn, your company website, or your own business brand, a great headshot can open doors you didn’t even know were closed. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: the best headshots aren’t just about showing up and smiling. A little preparation goes a long way toward getting a photo you actually love.
We’ve photographed thousands of professional headshots in Denver — everyone from startup founders to hospital executives to real estate agents building their personal brand. And over the years, we’ve picked up on exactly what separates the headshots that make people say “wow, that’s great” from the ones that end up sitting in a folder, unused.
Here’s our honest guide to preparing for professional headshots in Denver so you walk away with a photo you’re proud to put everywhere.

Start With Your Wardrobe
What you wear matters more than you think — and we’re not talking about wearing a suit (unless that’s your thing). The goal is to wear something that feels like you on a really good day. If you’re a creative director who lives in fitted blazers and sneakers, wear that. If you’re an attorney who’s always in a crisp button-down, go with what feels natural.

A few guidelines that consistently produce great results:
Solid colors photograph better than busy patterns. Deep blues, charcoal, burgundy, forest green, and black all work beautifully against most backgrounds. Avoid tiny stripes or intricate patterns — they can create a distracting moirĂ© effect on camera.
Bring a couple of outfit options. We always recommend this because what looks great in person doesn’t always translate on camera. Having options means we can find the perfect combination of color, fit, and vibe for your session.
Make sure everything fits well. This sounds obvious, but a too-loose collar or bunched-up sleeves will show in the final image. If something needs ironing, iron it. If you’re between sizes, go with the one that fits closer to your body.
Layers add visual interest. A well-fitted blazer over a simple top creates depth in the photo. Even if you don’t wear blazers daily, it’s worth trying on during the session — you might be surprised how polished it looks.
Grooming: Keep It Simple and Clean
You don’t need a full makeover for a headshot session, but a little attention to grooming goes a long way. Get your haircut a week before your session — not the day before. You want it to look natural, not fresh-from-the-chair stiff. If you color your hair, make sure your roots are touched up.
For skincare, the biggest tip we can give is to moisturize the morning of your session. Hydrated skin photographs better — it catches light more evenly and looks healthier on camera. If you have oily skin, a light mattifying moisturizer works great.

Guys — if you have facial hair, make sure it’s trimmed and shaped. If you’re clean-shaven, shave the morning of but give yourself at least an hour before the session so any redness has time to calm down.
For makeup, less is genuinely more for headshots. The camera picks up everything, so heavy foundation or bold eyeshadow that looks fine in person can look overdone in photos. A natural, polished look translates best. If you want professional makeup for your session, we can recommend talented makeup artists in Denver who specialize in on-camera work.
Think About Your Background
If your session is in our studio, we’ll handle the background setup — we have options ranging from clean white to textured and moody, depending on the look you’re going for. But it’s worth thinking about what context your headshot will live in.

A LinkedIn headshot or corporate directory photo? Clean, simple backgrounds work best. Building a personal brand for your coaching practice or creative business? An environmental portrait — shot at your office, a coffee shop, or an outdoor Denver location — might tell a better story.
We shoot headshots all over Denver. Some of our favorite spots include RiNo’s colorful murals for creatives, Civic Center Park for a classic Denver backdrop, and various coworking spaces around LoDo and Cherry Creek for a modern professional feel. If you have a specific location in mind, let us know — we’re always up for scouting new spots.

The Day Of: What to Expect at Your Denver Headshot Session
Show up rested. Seriously — get a good night’s sleep before your session. Tired eyes are the hardest thing to fix in post-production, and no amount of coffee can replicate the look of someone who’s genuinely well-rested.

Eat something before you come. Low blood sugar makes people look and feel drained. You don’t need a huge meal, but don’t show up running on empty.
If you wear glasses, bring them clean. Smudges and fingerprints show up in photos, and we’d rather spend our time getting great shots than cleaning lenses. If you have both glasses and contacts, bring both — we can try shots with and without.
Most importantly, come ready to have a good time. We know “relax and have fun” sounds like empty advice, but it’s the single biggest factor in getting a great headshot. When you’re comfortable, it shows — your shoulders drop, your smile reaches your eyes, and the photo looks like the best version of you instead of someone trying to look professional.

During the Session: Trust the Process
Our photographers will guide you through posing — that’s literally our job. You don’t need to practice your “photo face” in the mirror (please don’t, actually). We’ll adjust your angles, suggest where to put your hands, and coach your expression throughout the session.
Here’s a trick that works almost every time: think about something that makes you feel confident right before we take the shot. Not “smile” — think about closing that deal, finishing that project, or the moment you knew you were good at what you do. That internal confidence translates to something real in the photo that a forced smile never captures.
We’ll also shoot more frames than you’d expect. Out of a 30-minute headshot session, we might take 150-200 photos. That’s not because we’re hoping to get lucky — it’s because subtle shifts in expression make a huge difference, and having options during the selection process means you end up with something you truly love.

After Your Professional Headshots in Denver
We’ll deliver a curated gallery of your best shots, professionally edited and ready to use. Our retouching approach is natural — we clean up temporary blemishes, even out skin tones, and make subtle adjustments, but we’re not going to make you look like a different person. The goal is a photo that looks like you on your absolute best day.
Once you have your headshots, use them everywhere. LinkedIn, your company website, email signatures, speaker bios, social media profiles — consistency across platforms builds recognition and trust. And if you need specific crops or sizes for different platforms, just ask. We’re happy to help.
