Denver Botanic Gardens: A Photographer’s Paradise

Denver Botanic Gardens is one of our absolute favorite locations for engagement photos, family portraits, and elopement sessions. With 154 acres and seventeen distinct garden spaces, there’s genuinely something magical around every corner — and each space offers completely different photographic character.

What makes DBG so special is the sheer diversity. You’ve got intimate woodland trails with dappled light, expansive meadows with clean backgrounds, water features and bridges for reflection shots, and sculptural garden spaces with architectural interest. The Japanese Garden offers zen-like serenity with bamboo and stone. The Rose Garden bursts with color and romance. The Desert Green and Alpine Garden provide modern, minimalist backdrops. No matter your aesthetic, you’ll find spaces that feel authentically you.

The gardens also change dramatically with seasons. Spring brings cherry blossoms and fresh blooms. Summer offers vibrant colors and lush greenery with golden hour light. Fall delivers warm tones and dramatic skies. Even winter has its own stark, beautiful character. We often recommend visiting during your preferred season to see how the gardens will look during your session.

Seasons at Denver Botanic Gardens

Spring (April-May): Cherry blossoms, fresh new growth, soft light, and fewer crowds make this ideal for romance and fresh aesthetic. The grounds are lush but not yet heavy with summer foliage.

Summer (June-August): Peak color and vibrancy, but also peak crowds and intense midday light. We recommend early morning or late afternoon sessions to avoid heat and harsh shadows.

Fall (September-October): Warm golden light, subtle color changes, comfortable temperatures, and thinning crowds make this one of our favorite seasons. The light is exceptionally flattering.

Winter (November-March): Fewer crowds, interesting bare branches and evergreens for structure, and moody skies. It requires warmer clothing but offers a unique, intimate feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Denver Botanic Gardens open to photographers for engagement and family photos?

Yes! DBG welcomes portrait sessions. You’ll want to book in advance and check their current photography policies, but it’s absolutely one of the best locations for professional portraits in the Denver area.

What should we wear for Denver Botanic Gardens photos?

Coordinate colors rather than match. Earth tones, pastels, and jewel tones all work beautifully with the gardens’ natural palette. We recommend comfortable shoes since you’ll be walking through varied terrain. Avoid colors and patterns that might clash with bright flower beds.

What are the best seasons to photograph at Denver Botanic Gardens?

Fall (September-October) offers perfect light and comfortable temperatures. Spring is romantic with blooms. Summer is vibrant but requires timing for best light. Winter offers unique, moody character. All seasons work — it really depends on your aesthetic and comfort with weather.

Can we do engagement photos AND family photos at Denver Botanic Gardens?

Definitely. The gardens are big enough that couples can have intimate moments while families can spread out across different garden spaces. We often combine both during one session, giving you variety across different garden aesthetics.

What are the best garden spaces to photograph in at DBG?

The Japanese Garden for zen intimacy, the Rose Garden for romance and color, the Desert Green for modern minimalism, the woodland trails for natural shade and texture, and the open meadow areas for clean backgrounds. Every couple has different preferences, so we scout together to find your favorite spaces.
