There’s something magical about photographing families in Denver. The light is incredible year-round, but the truth is — the best time for your family photos really depends on what you’re envisioning and how you want to feel in those images. We’ve been shooting family sessions across Denver for years, and we’ve learned that each season offers something special. Let’s walk through what makes each time of year perfect for different priorities.
Spring: Fresh Starts and Soft Light at Washington Park and Cheesman Park
If you’re dreaming of photos with blooming flowers and that gentle, forgiving spring light — we’ve got good news. Denver’s spring, roughly late April through May, gives us exactly what we want. Washington Park comes alive with cherry blossoms and the whole park is suddenly paintable. Cheesman Park’s trees start leafing out, and the light gets softer than the harsh midday sun of summer.

The tricky part? Spring in Denver is unpredictable. We’ve had sessions where it snows on April 20th, and others where it’s 75 degrees and perfect. Here’s what we recommend: book your spring family photos for mid-to-late May when the weather is more stable. Dress your family in layers. Bring a light jacket or sweater that you can remove if the sun comes out, but keep it handy because Denver spring can surprise you. Colors that work beautifully? Soft pastels, whites, warm earth tones — they complement the fresh green backdrops without overwhelming them.

The light quality in spring is sublime. It’s not as intense as summer, so you won’t get those harsh shadows under noses and chins. Golden hour extends longer into the evening, giving us more time to capture those warm, glowing images of your family together.

Summer: Golden Hour Magic at Confluence Park and Sloan’s Lake
Denver summers are almost impossibly beautiful. Long evenings mean golden hour can happen as late as 8:30 p.m., and the light is buttery and warm. Confluence Park, where the Bear and South Platte Rivers meet, offers urban energy with natural water features. Sloan’s Lake gives you that gorgeous open-sky, water-view aesthetic that photographs like a dream.

Here’s the thing about summer family photos: you need to be strategic about timing. Midday light is harsh and unflattering — even with Denver’s low humidity and crystal-clear skies. We always book summer sessions for early morning (before 10 a.m.) or late evening (after 5 p.m.). That golden hour light is what makes summer sessions so stunning.

Summer wardrobe tips from our experience: lighter fabrics work best because it’s genuinely warm out there. Think linen, cotton, breathable materials. Colors pop in summer light — blues look electric near water, whites are crisp and clean, jewel tones photograph beautifully. Your family will stay cooler and more comfortable, which means better expressions and more genuine smiles.
One bonus of summer? School’s out, extended family is more likely to be available, and vacation time makes it easier to find a day that works for everyone. The long evenings mean we can capture multiple outfit changes or locations in a single session.

Fall: Peak Aspen Color at Golden, Lookout Mountain, and Mount Falcon
We won’t sugarcoat it — fall is when our calendar fills up the fastest. Peak aspen color in the Denver foothills typically happens mid-September through mid-October, and it’s absolutely worth planning around. The golden aspens at Lookout Mountain or Mount Falcon create a backdrop that’s both dramatic and warm.

Timing matters enormously in fall. The aspens are only brilliant for 3-4 weeks. We recommend booking fall sessions for mid-September to early October if you want that iconic golden aspen look. If you’re flexible and want fall colors without the crowds, the last two weeks of October offer stunning red oak and cottonwood colors with fewer families competing for the best spots.

Fall light in Denver is similar to spring — soft, diffused, beautiful. The afternoon light gets that amber quality that makes skin tones look warm and healthy. Shadows are gentler than summer. You don’t have the same time pressure as summer either — golden hour happens earlier, but it’s still workable from 4 p.m. onward.
For fall sessions, we love warm, layered clothing. Cardigans, flannel, cozy sweaters — these look comfortable and natural in fall photos. Rich colors work beautifully: burgundy, forest green, mustard, chocolate brown. They complement the golden and red tones of the foliage without getting lost in it.

Winter: Cozy Vibes and Snow Magic Downtown and City Park
Winter gets an unfair reputation in Denver family photography. We think that’s because many photographers avoid it. But winter sessions have a completely different — and equally beautiful — emotional quality. Downtown Denver in December creates a holiday feel even when you’re not trying. City Park becomes intimate and quieter. And if snow cooperates? Those are the photos families treasure for years.

Let’s be real: winter is unpredictable. We book winter sessions with flexibility built in. If snow falls the week before your session, amazing. If it doesn’t, the contrast of green evergreens and your family in cozy clothing is still gorgeous. We typically recommend booking for early December (before heavy snow usually arrives) or aiming for January-February when the light is still beautiful and crowds have thinned.

Winter wardrobe is actually one of our favorites to work with. Cozy layers look authentic and warm in images. Think chunky knit sweaters, wool coats, scarves, beanies — these create visual texture and depth that lighter summer clothing sometimes lacks. Dark colors, jewel tones, creams, and whites all pop against the muted winter palette.
Winter light in Denver is lower and warmer than you might expect. It’s not harsh, and the shorter day means golden hour practically happens in the late afternoon. Plus, there’s something about family togetherness and bundling close that creates intimacy in photos. Those cozy, connected moments are often some of families’ favorite images from their winter sessions.
