Fun in the Rain | A Whimsical Wedding at Lionsgate

June 12, 2023 March 15, 2026 From the Hip Photo1428 views

Kara and Manny were the most fun– if the photos didn’t already tell you that! They turned a rainy day into the best day and we’re grateful we were a part of it. Everyone had so much fun in the rain and there will be an amazing story to tell about this wedding.

All Different Poses

We had so much fun exploring Lionsgate with them, jumping in the air, getting caught in the rain, and having the most amazing first look as Kara was walking down the aisle! What a beautiful place and beautiful couple to take photos of. We are in love!

Rain, Rain, (Don’t) Go Away

The rainy day turned out to be the perfect touch to this dreamy outdoor wedding. They say that rain is good luck on your wedding day because when you tie a knot, it’s that much harder to untie when it’s wet, so rain symbolizes that the marriage is just as hard to unravel! We couldn’t agree more that this couple’s love is forever!

Sharing The Love!

Kara and Manny shared the love with their friends and family inside at the reception. The rain made this day all the more unique and special. A special thank you to all the vendors that helped make the day so incredible.

Embracing Rain: How to Have Beautiful Photos on a Rainy Wedding Day

Rain on your wedding day doesn’t mean beautiful photos are off the table — quite the opposite. Some of our most dramatic and emotionally resonant images come from couples who embraced the weather and leaned into the mood it created. A rainy day brings soft, directional light, intimate atmosphere, and a natural narrative arc that sunny days sometimes lack.

The key is shifting your mindset from “this is a problem” to “this is an opportunity.” Wet pavement creates stunning reflections. Cloud cover provides beautiful, diffused light that’s incredibly flattering for portraits. The energy of a couple who stays positive and playful in challenging conditions always translates to genuine, joyful images. We’ve found that rainy weddings often produce more authentic candid moments — people let their guard down, laugh harder, and create real memories.

Logistically, we adjust our approach for rain. We’ll shoot more under covered areas, use umbrellas creatively as props or diffusers, and plan for the fact that formal portraits might shift timing or location. But the emotional truth of your day — the joy, the commitment, the love — shines through even more brightly against gray skies and rain.

Techniques for Beautiful Rainy Day Wedding Photos

Wet surfaces like pavement, steps, and architectural features become reflective canvases. We position ourselves to capture reflections of you in puddles or wet stone. The cloudy light eliminates harsh shadows and creates even, flattering illumination. We also watch for dramatic moments — the umbrella moment, the rain-soaked first kiss, the joy of embracing the unexpected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we do if it rains on our wedding day?

First, take a deep breath. Some of our most beautiful and unique images come from rainy weddings. Have a backup plan (indoor ceremony or covered areas), but don’t let rain derail your day. The emotional authenticity of celebrating love in challenging conditions is incredibly powerful.

Can we still have beautiful outdoor photos if it’s raining?

Absolutely. Rainy conditions create soft, flattering light and atmospheric mood. Wet pavement reflects light beautifully. The key is embracing the rain rather than fighting it — use umbrellas creatively, find covered areas for formal portraits, and capture candid moments that celebrate the uniqueness of your rainy day.

What happens to an outdoor ceremony if bad weather rolls in?

A good venue and a flexible couple are everything. Have a tent or covered backup location planned. We’ve seen elaborate ceremonies moved to indoor spaces or reordered to happen under cover — and the photos are often more intimate and dramatic as a result. Talk through weather contingencies with your venue and photographer well in advance.

How do I prepare for potentially adverse weather on my wedding day?

Work closely with your venue on backup plans, brief your vendors (photographer, videographer, florist) on how you want to proceed if weather shifts, and consider umbrella styles that work with your aesthetic. Communicate with your wedding party. Most importantly, set a positive tone — if you and your partner are calm and adaptable, everyone else will be too.

Do photographers charge extra for adverse weather or challenging conditions?

We don’t charge extra for rain or challenging conditions. Our job is to capture your day beautifully no matter what the sky does. However, some logistics might shift (timing, location, coverage). We always discuss weather contingency plans during engagement consultations so you know exactly what to expect.
